In “Stabat Mater”, choreographer Stephen Shropshire enters into dialogue with Pergolesi’s renowned vocal work of the same name. Inspired by the 13th-century poem by a Franciscan monk about the sorrow of the Virgin Mary at the crucifixion of her son Jesus Christ, Shropshire’s choreography for three female dancers (aged 36–46) is not a literal interpretation but an embodied translation. The dancers bring emotion, sound and rhythm to life in a refined interplay of harmony and tension, emphasizing both the universality and intimacy of human grief and grace. Performed with live music by Ad Mosam.
